I have come to the conclusion that many teens and singles today are enrolled in a class that I call Divorce 101. In fact, I often say that most are enrolled, few have failed, and even I passed with “flying colors”. No. I’ve never been divorced. Thankfully, I have one of the forty-seven out of a hundred marriages that actually make it today, however, I would have to say that if it wasn’t for the grace of God, my wife and I would be in a different category today.

Divorce 101. Can it really be? Could we label what most teens and singles experience before marriage a syllabus called Divorce 101 or Divorce Preparation? Is the average home, school setting, TV show, and dating scene more of a training ground for those that will have a mediocre or a dismal marriage? I am emphatically convinced that this is the case, and I challenge everyone that is either single or has some type of influence over someone that is single to listen very carefully for the next few moments.

Now, I realize that when two rivers come together, there will always be a certain amount of whitewater that will occur, however, must there be so much for the many newlyweds of our day? Does the first year of marriage have to be as difficult as many are experiencing?

Really, while many preachers are loudly proclaiming the blessings of marriage some are wondering if God hasn’t played some type of cosmic joke on mankind by giving us the institution of marriage.

Now, what’s wrong with this picture? I think I’ve discovered a major part of the answer. As a matter of fact, I really don’t believe the problem starts the minute a couple says, “I do”, nor do I believe that couples mysteriously fall out-of-love. This, in my opinion, is a major mistake. In reality, the problem begins with many before the wedding day.

You see, whether conciously or subconsciously many are enrolling in Divorce 101 when they are young, and they are learning lessons and habits that will prove to hurt them for life. That is, many teens and singles are picking up different forms of emotional, spiritual, and mental baggage that will be sure to weigh down their future relationships, and unfortunatley, many today, by the time they get married, are just throwing out the marriage instead of the baggage that is weighing down their marriage.
