Wife Has Committed Adultery. How Do I Rebuild Trust?
Question: “My wife has committed adultery. How am I supposed to rebuild trust back?”
Answer:
This is indeed a big subject, and, unfortunately, an increasingly popular one.
I often give couples a little formula for rebuilding trust. It is Change Over Time or Change / Time. Most don’t mind the change, however, few are thrilled about the amount of time that it takes to fix betrayal in a marital relationship.
Now, many think that time alone is a healer. This is not true. In fact, time alone without the proper change is like trying to make biscuits with only a stick of butter. There is nothing wrong with butter, however, it must be mixed with other ingredients in order to have the desired effect.
It is also important to have the proper change take place. In other words, when adultery occurs, it is all too common for the perpetrator of the relational crime to panic once he or she has seen the error of their ways. In fact, it is extremely common for the perpetrator to seem like he or she is willing to do whatever it takes to save the relationship, however, most people are far too emotionally involved in their situation to know which way to turn. During this time, a person needs more than velocity, they need vector.
