Why Do We Need to Get Marriage Counseling?

“My wife wants to get outside help for our marriage problems. Why is it better for us to get outside help? I don’t see why we need to get marriage counseling?”
Answer:
We do not provide marriage counseling through this web site, however, I would like to answer your question of why it is important to get outside help.
Even though I rarely answer a question in this manner, I am going to just make a list for you:
1. You are too emotionally involved with your situation to know which way to turn on your own. It is a normal occurrence to have couples call us that have been trying to fix their marriage problems on their own for years, but to no avail. It is also a common occurrence for these very same couples to see much of the tension that has been present in their relationship to disappear after just a few sessions.
2. If you are experiencing marriage problems, then you and your wife have little trust in one another, therefore, you tend to make really bad marriage counselors or coaches of one another. I often say that your bank of account of credibility and authority with your wife is probably at an all-time low at this point. You want to go to someone who has automatic credibility and authority in each other’s eyes.
3. Lots of couples have great motives, but lousy methods when it comes to fixing their marriage problems. Desire alone will not be enough at this time. You need to seek out a specialist who does this day after day that knows what you need to change first.
4. What have you been doing to fix your marriage problems up to this point? Is it working?
