The tragedy of many marital breakups and problems is that both parties typically want the marriage to work, but they fail to know how to promote the change that they really want in the relationship. The even greater tragedy is that in an attempt to fix the marriage, both parties will typically do more to drive each other way than to actually help their marriage.
Many husbands and wives use anger, coldness, and hostility to try to get the other person to change while others are vigorously using their reasoning power and even biblical phrases to fix their marital issues. In the end, both must realize that the answer does not lie in getting the other person to change, but rather in you, yourself, becoming the change that you want your marriage to be.
Many couples do not need to change their motives, just their methods. They still need to keep fighting for their marriage, but just with different weapons. In our Audio Cd Series, I encourage couples to lay down the swords of sarcasm, ridicule, and anger and pick up the swords of kindness, thankfulness, and unconditional love. It’s not only what you signed up for years (or months) ago, but it is also the only way to truly solve your marital issues.
