The Feelings-Driven Marriage
Do You Have a Feelings-Driven Marriage or a Principle-Driven Marriage? / How to Better Your Marriage – by Dr. Raymond Force
When I begin coaching a couple, one of the first steps I walk them through is learning how to move from an emotionally-driven marriage to a principle-driven marriage. Why is this important? For many couples, their actions are a slave to their feelings of anger, grumpiness, and self-centeredness. The problem is that these feelings are a really bad master in that they beat couples down with the whips of discord, disunity, and, at times, divorce.
In order for couples to move forward in their relationship with one another, they will have to make their emotions a slave to Biblical principles rather than their actions a slave to their emotions. Without this tweak in their approach to their marriage, they will continue down the same path that they have always walked.
One of my favorite verses is Proverbs 16:3. This verse says:
“Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
Notice the order. The Bible does not tell us to feel it and then to do it. God says that in order to prosper, couples and individuals must do what is right and let their feelings follow their actions instead of the other way around.
Are you living an emotionally charged life? Do you have a feelings-driven marriage instead of a principle-driven marriage? In my opinion, this is always a recipe for disaster because our natural impulses are typically the wrong impulses to follow. This, in my opinion, is why Romans 3:16-17 says the following:
“Destruction and misery are in their ways: And the way of peace have they not known.”
Simply put, anger, selfishness, and strife are a natural bi-product of the sin nature, and, in order to prosper, couples must learn a new way. One that is contrary to what comes natural for us.
