I like to say that if you are going to fix your marriage problems, then you will have to do that which comes least natural to you as a person.
Contrary to what our romance novels and television shows teach us, true love does not come natural to human beings (Romans 3:17). True love is not something that just flows out of an abundance of feelings that you have for another person. In fact, that’s not love as much as it is a mirage that only exists on the television screen or in a high school relationship.
Most couples that call me for the first time are slaves to their own emotions. That is, their actions are subservient to their feelings, and, unfortunately, our feelings are often a bad taskmaster in that they often leave us in state of confusion. This is why one of my first goals with a couple is to move them out of a relationship where their actions are subservient to their feelings and into a relationship where their feelings are subservient to Biblical actions. When this occurs, I find that couples are able to soar to new heights that they have seldom ever enjoyed.
I heard someone say the other day, “If you always do what you have always done, then you will always get what you have always got.”. May I ask you a question? How has following your feelings of anger, bitterness, coldness, and resentment helped your marriage? If you feel it has, then you would definitely be the first couple in 6,000 years of world history that has benefited from serving these horrible despots.
I like to say that I coach couples to fight for their marriage in a way where they are not fighting with one another.
